In his book, A New Earth, Ekhart Tolle writes: “Do I want the present moment to be my friend or my enemy? The present moment is inseparable from life, so you are really deciding what kind of relationship you want to have with life. Once you have decided you want the present moment to be your friend, it is up to you to make the first move; Become friendly toward it, welcome it no matter in what disguise it comes, and soon you will see the results. Life becomes friendly toward you; people become helpful, circumstances cooperative. One decision changes your entire reality. But that one decision you have to make again and again and again – until it becomes natural to live that way.”

Overcoming Challenges

Often, on the practice field, we are confronted with life moments that may be disguised as difficult situations and result in a bad day at practice. Every practice session presents some challenge to help you grow.

You may see tough practice sessions as an obstacle to your goal. However, you have the opportunity to adjust your perspective. Challenges present themselves when they are needed. And you will benefit when you embrace the present moment and tackle the challenge. Likely, you will encounter similar challenges during a tournament. These challenges are not something to keep you from your goal. They are a critical path toward achieving Better Than Your Best performance.

Stay in the moment no matter what it is. Celebrate the easy days and embrace the challenge of a difficult day. Work with the challenge as opposed to against it – the positive energy will encourage cooperation and progress. Who you are and what you are capable of is not changed by the challenge of a practice session. What changes is your ability to adapt, and thus, your reality.
